Gulfport has its own history. Hamilton Disston laid it out as Disston City in 1884, and the town took the name Gulfport in 1910. The 1930s Gulfport Casino Ballroom on the waterfront at the base of the city pier is still the landmark social hall, and since the early 2000s a Waterfront Arts District along Beach Boulevard has filled with galleries and a monthly Art Walk. The oak-lined and brick streets around it are full of original early-1900s cottages. The houses that came out of all of it are what we work in today.
A kitchen in a 1920s cottage a few blocks off Beach Boulevard is a completely different job than a kitchen in a mid-century Historic Gulfport concrete-block home or a Boca Ciega Bay waterfront home. The older cottages bring plaster walls, narrow doorways, and original trim worth keeping. Mid-century block homes often need slab plumbing reroutes and updated wiring. Homes on the water add salt-air exposure and flood-zone review, and the Town Shores condos come with association approvals and stack and galley constraints.
The layouts share one problem: they close the kitchen off from the rest of the home. Old cottage kitchens sealed behind a wall as a back-of-house work room.
