Someone uses it every day, and it is the one fixture in the house that spends its whole life wet. Chipped pans, cracked grout, doors that never quite seal, and a slow stain spreading on the ceiling below are all the same story: the shower has outlived the waterproofing behind it.
They are the finish. When they fail, water reaches whatever is behind them, and on most older showers that is drywall and framing.
Water that cannot reach the drain sits in the pan. That is what turns a small failure into a subfloor repair.
A moulded insert cannot be repaired in one spot. Once it crazes or the seams open, replacement is the only honest fix.
A tiled shower is assembled from decisions, not ordered as a unit. These are the ones that change how it looks and how it works, and you make each of them with a designer once the project is underway.
Large-format tile with fewer grout lines, or a mosaic floor for grip and drainage. Full-height walls, a wet-room layout with the tub inside the glass, or a corner enclosure that gives the floor space back. The footprint is measured off your actual walls, so an out-of-square older bathroom gets a shower that fits it rather than filler strips hiding the gap.
A sloped mortar pan pitched to a centre or linear drain. A linear drain along one wall lets the floor pitch in a single plane, which is what makes large-format floor tile and a curbless entry possible.
Frameless panels with minimal hardware, a semi-frameless door, or an open walk-in with no door at all. Glass is templated after tile is set, so it fits the finished walls rather than the framing.
Recessed niches framed into the wall cavity and waterproofed with the enclosure, plus a tiled bench or a teak fold-down seat. Both are framed during construction, so they have to be planned before demolition.
Thermostatic and pressure-balanced valves, rain heads, handhelds on a slide bar, and body sprays. Our licensed plumbers (CFC 1430533) set the rough-in during framing, so the head lands where you actually want it.
Demolition is the honest part of the job. On a shower that has been leaking quietly for years, the tile is rarely the worst of it. Here is what we look for, and what replaces it.
Where water has been sitting, studs and subfloor get cut out and replaced. This is repaired before anything new goes in, and it is the part a fixed-price surround quote cannot account for.
Old pans settle and lose their pitch. We rebuild the pan in mortar, pitched evenly to the drain, rather than tiling over a floor that already holds water.
Plenty of older showers have tile set straight onto drywall or greenboard. A bonded Schluter KERDI membrane goes over the pan and up every wall, forming the watertight vessel the tile then sits on.
Every corner, joint, and change of plane is banded and sealed as its own step, because that is where failures start rather than in the middle of a wall.
Corroded valves and old cast-iron drain lines get replaced while the wall is open. Our licensed plumbers (CFC 1430533) handle the drain and valve work throughout.
A shower that works for someone with limited mobility is mostly a set of framing decisions made early. Get them right and nothing about the finished bathroom announces itself.

Most CMK shower replacements run about one to two weeks of on-site work, with a design and selections phase beforehand. The old enclosure comes out, the framing and plumbing are inspected and corrected, the pan and waterproofing go in, then tile, glass, and fixtures. Showers that move a wall, relocate the drain, or replace old cast-iron plumbing take longer. Your project manager gives you a full schedule before demolition starts.
Yes. A shower-only replacement is one of the most common projects we run. We isolate the work to the enclosure, protect the rest of the room, and leave the vanity, flooring, and fixtures you are keeping untouched. If the surrounding finishes are dated enough that a new shower would look out of place next to them, your estimator will say so at the consultation rather than after demolition.

Tile goes on only once that enclosure is watertight. Grout is porous and tile has seams, so the waterproofing behind them is what actually protects your framing.
Yes. Where the floor structure allows, we recess it so the shower floor sits flush with the bathroom floor and still slopes correctly to the drain. Where it does not, we build the lowest threshold your structure will take. Grab bar blocking, benches, handheld shower heads, and lever controls are specified during design, not added afterward, so the finished bathroom still reads as a bathroom.
Frameless glass uses thicker tempered panels with minimal hardware and shows off the tile, which suits an owner's suite where the shower is the focal point. Semi-frameless uses a slim frame on some edges, costs less, and is easier to keep sealed in a busy guest bath. Both are tempered safety glass. Your designer measures the opening after tile is set so the glass is templated to the finished walls, not to the framing.
Yes, on two levels. The products carry their manufacturer warranties, and the installation is covered by CMK's one-year Peace of Mind Warranty on workmanship. Because CMK holds the general, plumbing, and electrical licenses in house, State Certified General Contractor CGC 1516665, Certified Plumbing Contractor CFC 1430533, and Registered Electrical Contractor ER 13016498, one company is accountable for the whole enclosure rather than a supplier and a separate installer.
