Gulfport sits on the shore of Boca Ciega Bay, just southwest of St. Petersburg, and it has grown its own distinct character over more than a century. Founded as Disston City in 1884 after land baron Hamilton Disston, later known as Veteran City, the town was renamed Gulfport in 1910. The Gulfport Casino Ballroom, built in the 1930s on the waterfront at the base of the city pier, is still the community's gathering hall, and since the early 2000s the town has been known for its Waterfront Arts District along Beach Boulevard, with independent galleries and a monthly Gulfport Art Walk. That history shows up in the housing stock. Oak-lined, some brick, streets near the arts district are full of original early-20th-century cottages and Craftsman bungalows. Historic Gulfport and the blocks toward the Stetson area mix in mid-century ranch and CBS construction. Bay-front houses look out over the water from Shore Boulevard, and the Town Shores 55+ community adds a large stock of waterfront condos on Boca Ciega Bay.
