Safety Harbor sits on the west shore of Old Tampa Bay, and people have been settling this ground for a very long time. The Tocobaga made it their principal village and ceremonial center, and their temple mound still stands about 20 feet tall in Philippe Park. Hernando de Soto named the mineral springs here the "Springs of the Holy Spirit," convinced he had found the Fountain of Youth, and Odet Philippe, the first non-native settler, planted Florida's first grapefruit. That history shows up in the housing stock. 1920s cottages and bungalows line the blocks around the Main Street district, near the Safety Harbor Resort & Spa that opened in 1925 as the Safety Harbor Sanatorium. North Bay Hills, Green Springs, Briar Creek, and Mullet Creek are mostly mid-century ranch and CBS construction. Bay-front houses look out over the water from Bayshore Drive, and newer subdivisions fill in along the Enterprise Road and McMullen-Booth Road corridors.
