Water hardness is the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium the water is carrying. The upper half of that range sits well inside the USGS very hard category. Pinellas also notes that sulfides occur naturally in Florida groundwater, which is why some homes get a faint rotten-egg smell from the hot side.
For a shower fixture, that chemistry produces three distinct failure paths. Scale deposits inside the cartridge, which is what causes a valve to feel gritty or start dripping. In practice, thermostatic is the upgrade that Tampa Bay homeowners notice, because our incoming water temperature genuinely shifts between January and August. It is also the right call whenever a shower has multiple outlets, since diverting between a rain head and body sprays changes the flow demand on the valve.
The universal rough-in advantage nobody explains
Here is the detail that changes how homeowners budget. Brizo is the luxury brand of Delta Faucet Company, and Brizo shower systems are built on the same MultiChoice Universal rough that Delta uses [4]. Hansgrohe built its entire concealed program around the iBox Universal, which the manufacturer describes as compatible with all standard hansgrohe faucet ranges specifically so the trim can be changed later without opening the wall again [5].
What that means for you is real optionality. Set a MultiChoice or iBox valve body during rough-in and you can install a moderate trim today, then swap to a higher collection or a different finish in five years as a trim-only change. Moen’s platform is standardized in a different way, engineered so that one common cartridge serves a very large installed base, which is what makes it so easy to service. Neither approach is wrong. They optimize for different things, and knowing which you are buying is the point.
What the Florida Building Code actually requires
This is not a preference conversation. The Florida Building Code, Residential, Section P2708.4 requires that individual shower and tub/shower combination valves be balanced-pressure, thermostatic, or combination valves conforming to ASSE 1016 or ASME A112.18.1, that they be rated for the flow rate of the installed shower head, and that they include a means to limit the maximum setting to 120 degrees Fahrenheit, field adjusted per the manufacturer’s instructions. The code also states plainly that in-line thermostatic valves cannot be used to satisfy this requirement [6].
Two consequences follow. First, a valve has to be sized to the shower you actually built, which is exactly why a multi-outlet shower with a rain head, a handheld, and body sprays needs a larger valve and a diverter rather than a standard single-function body. Second, the 120-degree limit stop is a field adjustment, meaning somebody has to set it correctly at trim-out. Finish durability against hard water
Finish is where a premium fixture either justifies itself or does not. There are four finishing technologies in common use, and Hansgrohe publishes a useful breakdown of all four: PVD is the most durable and most common for metallic surfaces, resistant to scratching, cleaning agents, and salty sea air; lacquer is durable but less so than chrome or PVD; powder coat is used for non-metallic colors and is reasonably chip and abrasion resistant; and polished chrome is an electroplated finish that is genuinely very durable [7]. In a hard-water coastal market, that ranking is the whole story.
How PVD works, and why it matters here
Physical Vapor Deposition happens in a vacuum chamber where pure metals are vaporized and combined with reactive gases, then deposited onto the fixture so the color becomes part of a hard, bonded surface rather than a coating sitting on top of one. Delta Faucet Company describes the result as high in hardness, highly resistant to abrasion and chemical attack, and more durable than polished chrome, and confirms that all PVD finishes across Delta, Brizo, and Newport Brass carry a lifetime warranty against corrosion, tarnishing, or discoloring [8]. Hansgrohe deposits a layer 0.3 microns thick and publishes a scratch test in which abrasive sponges were cycled 500 times at 300 grams of pressure with the PVD surface remaining intact where polished chrome and polished brass did not [7]. Brizo’s Brilliance finishes are its PVD line, tested against more than 100 household cleaners and guaranteed not to corrode, tarnish, or discolor for the life of the faucet, including under prolonged coastal exposure [9].
Delta approaches the problem from a second direction with Lumicoat, an ultra-sleek surface that repels liquids and is guaranteed to resist mineral buildup and hard water stains, available in Chrome, Polished Nickel, Arctic Stainless, Champagne Bronze, and Black Stainless [10]. For a home on hard water, a guarantee written specifically against mineral buildup is a meaningful distinction. Moen’s Spot Resist is a similar idea applied to stainless and brushed nickel, designed to resist water spots and fingerprints so the surface wipes clean quickly [11].
The finish warranty detail worth reading
Hansgrohe warrants hansgrohe and AXOR products against defects in material and workmanship for as long as the original purchaser owns both the product and the home, with one carve-out: the warranty period for products in Rubbed Bronze, Matte Black, and Matte White is three years from the date of purchase [12]. That is not a reason to avoid those finishes, and matte black remains one of the most requested looks in our Design Studios. It is a reason to know what you are choosing before it goes on the wall, especially in a coastal bath.
What these premium finishes actually look like
Finish names do not translate well to a screen, which is why selections happen in person. Here is what the categories look like and what each one does in a real bathroom.
Warm brass, champagne bronze, and polished gold. These are the finishes driving premium bathroom design in the current market. Brushed and satin versions have a directional grain that scatters light, which is genuinely practical on hard water because it hides the faint haze that forms between wipe-downs. Polished gold is the opposite: a mirror surface that looks spectacular and shows every drop, so it belongs in a primary suite where someone will actually maintain it.
Matte black and black onyx. A flat, non-reflective surface that reads as a deliberate design line against white or stone-look tile. It conceals fingerprints better than any polished finish. The tradeoff is that dried hard-water residue shows as a light film on a dark surface, so matte black rewards a household that wipes the trim down. Note the Hansgrohe warranty term above when you specify it.
Brushed nickel, luxe nickel, and brushed stainless. The most forgiving category on hard water, and the reason it stays perennially popular here. The satin grain breaks up reflection so spotting essentially disappears at normal viewing distance. This is where Moen’s Spot Resist and Delta’s Lumicoat both live, and it is the finish we recommend most often for a busy family bath.
Polished chrome and polished nickel. Chrome is the benchmark for a reason. It is electroplated, extremely durable, and universally available. Polished nickel is its warmer cousin, slightly softer in tone with a faint amber cast. Both are mirror finishes, so both show hard-water spotting immediately. On a linear drain or a valve plate, that visibility is manageable. On a large rain head you look up at every day, plan on regular wiping.
Oil-rubbed and rubbed bronze. The traditional counterpart to matte black, and a different animal entirely. Where matte black is uniform and graphic, rubbed bronze is deliberately variegated, with a dark brown-black field and warmer copper highlights where edges catch light. That variation is an advantage on hard water, because a faint mineral haze reads as part of the finish rather than as a flaw. It pairs naturally with travertine, warm stone, and wood-look tile. This is the other finish family covered by the shorter Hansgrohe warranty term noted above, so confirm the coverage on the specific line you select.
The cleaning mistake that voids your warranty
Hard water pushes homeowners toward aggressive cleaners, and that is where expensive fixtures die. All four manufacturers exclude that damage from coverage. Moen’s lifetime limited warranty does not cover damage from cleaners containing abrasives, alcohol, or other organic solvents [13]. Hansgrohe excludes damage from abrasive or caustic cleaning agents and from no-rinse cleaning products, and separately excludes damage from excessive water pressure [12]. Delta’s position on Lumicoat is that it wipes clean with a soft cloth and needs no cleaners or chemicals at all [10].
The routine that protects both the finish and the coverage is unglamorous.
- Wipe the trim dry after showers when you can. Nearly all visible spotting is minerals left behind by evaporation, not damage.
- Use a soft cloth and water as the default. Skip the scouring pads, bathroom scrubs, and lime removers on finished surfaces.
- Check the manufacturer’s care guidance before using any vinegar solution, since instructions differ by brand and finish.
- Soak the shower head, not the trim, if flow becomes uneven, and follow the manufacturer’s method for that specific head.
- Consider whole-home water treatment if your hardness runs at the top of the local range. It protects the water heater and the valve cartridges, not just the shiny parts.
Parts availability, the criterion homeowners forget
Ten years out, the question is not which fixture was prettiest. It is how fast somebody can put a cartridge in it. Moen is the clear leader here because a single widely used Posi-Temp cartridge serves an enormous installed base, and it is available from Moen directly under a lifetime limited warranty for the original homeowner [13] [14]. Delta and Brizo benefit from the shared MultiChoice platform, which means the rough-in behind your wall is one of the most common valve bodies in American residential plumbing. Hansgrohe parts are high quality and well documented, but specialty cartridges and trims for European collections are typically ordered rather than pulled off a local shelf, so a repair is a scheduled event rather than a same-day one.
Configuration affects this too. A specialty outlet such as a large flush-mounted ceiling rain panel is a more involved replacement than a standard wall-mount head on an arm, because it is integrated into the ceiling assembly and its supply is routed above the finished surface. That is not a reason to avoid one, but it is worth knowing that the more custom the configuration, the more the parts conversation matters.
One more warranty condition applies across the board and is easy to trip over: both Moen and Hansgrohe limit coverage to products purchased from authorized sellers [12] [13]. Fixtures bought from a discount online marketplace may fall outside the warranty entirely. - Choose the finish technology, not just the color. PVD for coastal and hard-water exposure and for anything you want to look identical in fifteen years.
- Read the finish warranty term. Matte and bronze finishes can carry shorter coverage than the brand’s headline lifetime language.
- Decide how much serviceability you want to buy. A universal rough-in buys future design flexibility; a standardized cartridge buys fast, cheap repairs. Both are legitimate.
